The beach near the Montagu campground in the north of Tasmania was home to lots of soldier crabs. I love how these little guys move – particularly how they feed and build their hidey holes. The feed by picking up sand and dropping it past their mouth, filtering it as they go. Their homes are made by lifting and moving sand as they spiral sideways into the hole they create, finally topping it off with a little roof. Great for hiding from predators (me) and the sun.
